Aufeis (pronounced "off ice") refers to ice that builds up in layers over arctic rivers. Large residual patches of aufeis align the river's margins throughout much of the short arctic summers. In this composition, flora-like patterns of windblown sediments collect atop the aufeis' frozen surface.
