Sea Otter

Sea otters are extremely difficult to photograph. Their open water habitat gives them an unrestricted line-of-sight. To get this photograph, I traveled to a calm, protected saltwater slough in Monterey Bay, California. By drifting toward the otter in a raft, I was able to run several rolls of film through my camera without disturbing my subject.

Provenance for the collector: this image was photographed on film and featured in the book The Living Wild.
