Ebony and Ivory

Plains zebra (Equus quagga), Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

I am always looking for ways to photograph subjects in a new way, and here I cropped in very tightly to make a more abstract composition. I wanted light and dark throughout the entire image, providing just enough detail for perspective. Like photographers all over, zebras are one of my favorite subjects because they look like they were put together by a design team. There is a reason for their striking coloring, though. From a distance the stripes become gray and they blend into the neutral environment. At close range it seems that this would be impossible.
