Emperor Penguins and Chick

There are challenges in photographing intimate portraits of penguins. First is getting to their colony; second, simplifying the image by singling out a few individuals in the midst of these remote rookeries; and third, maintaining an unobstructed view of the subject. Often I was lying on the ice, looking through my viewfinder, when everything would suddenly go white. I would look up to see a curious penguin standing directly in front of my lens, bending over to examine it.

For collectors: this iconic image was photographed on film.
