Bearing a colorful array of umbrellas, a procession of visitors follow a pathway through a bamboo forest within Kyoto’s famous Temple District. Each fall, when maples turn red, tens of thousands of Japanese make an annual pilgrimage to the ancient temples and their exquisite gardens.
