Tewa Deer Dancers

Tewa deer dancers. San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, USA (August 1994)

When Pueblo people of the American southwest dance they pray to the Creator. “Every dance has a purpose,” says Pop Chalee, of the Taos Pueblo. “We dance for rain; we dance for healing; we dance for seasons; we dance for joy; we dance for our children; we dance for the people; we dance for courage. The drum plays to the beat of the heart, to the beat of the Earth.”

Provenance for the collector: this image is featured in Tribes (1997, Clarkson Potter) and  Acts of Faith (2026, Mandala Publishing)
