As I crisscrossed the vast and arid Gobi Desert in Mongolia, I came across an unexpected oasis at the base of some extensive sand dunes. It was a refreshing relief from the dusty landscape. The takhi iris flourish every June or July in the bright sun and saturated soil of this particular spot where a stream runs.
Provenance for collectors: this iconic image was photographed on film and appears in the book Edge of the Earth, Corner of the Sky.
